Functional Mushrooms vs. Psychedelic Mushrooms

You can Listen to the Article clicking in the play button below.

Mushrooms have been part of human culture for millennia, used for their nutritional value, medicinal properties, and in some cases, for spiritual enlightenment. When discussing mushrooms with healing properties, two main categories often come up: functional mushrooms and psychedelic mushrooms. Though they share the umbrella term ‘mushroom,’ their uses, effects, and legality differ substantially.

Functional Mushrooms

Functional mushrooms are the types that are commonly used for their health benefits but don’t produce the hallucinogenic effects that psychedelic mushrooms do.

Reishi
  • Where it’s found: Primarily in Asia, growing on hardwood trees
  • Appearance: Red-varnished, kidney-shaped cap
  • Healing Properties: Known for its immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties.
Lion’s Mane
  • Where it’s found: North America, Europe, and Asia, growing on hardwoods
  • Appearance: White, globe-shaped, with long dangling spines
  • Healing Properties: Believed to promote cognitive function and support nerve growth.
Chaga
  • Where it’s found: Northern Hemisphere, often on birch trees
  • Appearance: Resembles a clump of dirt or charcoal rather than a typical mushroom
  • Healing Properties: Rich in antioxidants, may lower cholesterol and improve immunity.

Psychedelic Mushrooms

Psychedelic mushrooms contain compounds like psilocybin or psilocin, which can alter perception, mood, and cognitive processes.

Psilocybe Cubensis
  • Where it’s found: Tropical and subtropical environments around the world
  • Appearance: Golden cap with a white stem
  • Healing Properties: Used in clinical trials for treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
Psilocybe Azurescens
  • Where it’s found: Pacific Northwest of the United States
  • Appearance: Caramel or chestnut cap with a slender stem
  • Healing Properties: Similar to Psilocybe Cubensis but considerably stronger. Used in experimental psychotherapy.
Amanita Muscaria
  • Where it’s found: Northern Hemisphere, in conifer and deciduous forests
  • Appearance: Bright red cap with white spots
  • Healing Properties: Not a psilocybin mushroom but still psychedelic. Traditionally used in shamanic practices.

Whether you’re looking to boost your immune system, enhance cognitive function, or explore the depths of your consciousness, there’s likely a mushroom that fits your needs. However, it’s essential to consult healthcare providers for diagnosing or treating health conditions, and always adhere to local laws when considering the use of psychedelic substances.
